What is a glassless mirror?

Glassless mirrors were originally developed in the early 1960’s by British Aerospace to lighten the payload on the aircraft. Since, the highly reflective lightweight material has been repurposed across many industries including in NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

Basically Glassless mirrors consist of a mylar film wrapped and heat shrunk over a rigid foam core which is framed with aluminium. Raised edges on this frame create an airspace designed to flex under minor impact without damage. This ‘dead air space’ also offers a positive thermal insulating value.

This new technology offers a clearer and brighter reflection giving you a high definition image than your standard mirrors.

Mylar film surfaces are 90-92% reflective whereas your standard glass mirror is around 70%.

Benefits of Glassless Mirrors

  • Sharper and brighter reflection
  • Lighter! Around 85% lighter than glass mirrors the same size
  • No Fogging
  • Free of distortion
  • Shatterproof
  • Safer
  • Reduce echo common with glass mirrors; acting as an acoustic dampener

Where can you use your Mylar Glassless Mirror?

The range of benefits to using a glassless mirror over a traditional mirror makes them the perfect solution for therapy rooms, exercise rooms, dance studios, gyms and any setting that uses large mirrors or in which safety is of extra importance and require large, lightweight and shatterproof mirrors.

The use of our mylar mirrors is not just limited to clinical environments, though. Their easy installation combined with a lack of distortion, shatterproof construction and a brighter and clearer image mean they are utilized for a myriad of applications. They are notably popular for use in action-filled settings such as dance studios, gyms, and nightclubs. The use of glassless mirrors in these settings is particularly important, as standard mirrors represent a dangerous risk and a high potential for smashing due to the large amount of physical activity in these settings. Additionally, the noise dampening ability of glassless mirrors is valuable in these settings as they tend to be noisy.

More examples include dressing rooms, stage productions and scenery, merchandising displays, fashion shows, playrooms, lobbies, ceilings, public restrooms, casinos, night clubs, physical therapy, schools, nursing homes, theatrical lighting, and hospitals. It’s a mirror-like any other mirror. If you need a wall-length reflective surface, glassless mirrors will do the trick

Why you need a mirror in your studio or training centre?

Mirrors are essential for any training centre, especially dance studios and dojos. They enable athletes and performers to monitor their movements, improve their techniques, and perfect their skills. However, traditional glass mirrors pose many safety risks, particularly for high-impact activities like martial arts and gymnastics. That’s where glassless mylar mirrors come in. Not only are they safer, but they are also lightweight, shatterproof, and easy to install. They provide the same crystal-clear reflection as glass mirrors, but without the risk of injury. With glassless mylar mirrors, you can create a safe, functional, and professional training environment that meets and exceeds current safety standards.

Why Mylar Mirrors require little cleaning

Glassless Mirrors require less cleaning than traditional glass mirrors. This is due to their unique low static surface that is resistant to smudges, fingerprints and dust, making it easy to maintain their reflective clarity. This makes them an ideal choice for busy facilities where cleaning can become a time-consuming task.

  • Uses which involve smoke fumes or cooking grease will require a more consistent cleaning regime.

If your glassless mirror has accumulated excessive dust and debris, before attempting to clean the mirror, A “swiffer”, feather duster or synthetic equivalent can works well for this. You can also use a can of compressed air. They remove larger debris before wiping, thus reducing the chance of scratching. After you have done this you may spray a light cleaner and gently wipe with a soft microfibre cloth.

Additionally you can add one of our cloth covers helping prevent your mirror from:

  • UV Damage
  • Flying Objects
  • Dust, dirt and grime

Are Mylar Mirrors Safe?

YES! Mylar mirrors are also designed to meet and exceed current safety standards in Australia. They are tested to ensure that they meet strict safety requirements for impact resistance, fire resistance, and other important factors, ensuring that they are safe and suitable for use in a wide range of public and commercial application.

How do you repair a puncture or tear in your mylar glassless mirror?

Repairing a mylar glassless mirror is generally quite simple. If the mirror becomes punctured or teared, it can be repaired with mylar repair tape.

  1. First, ensure the surface of the mirror is clean and dry.
  2. Then, apply the tape or patch to cover the damaged area, smoothing out any wrinkles or air bubbles.
    1. Be sure to apply enough tape or patching material to completely cover the tear or puncture, and extend at least an inch beyond the damaged area in all directions.
  3. Once the tape or patch is in place, gently smooth out any remaining bubbles and ensure the edges are firmly adhered to the mirror.

Note: If the damage is too extensive, it may be necessary to replace the entire mirror panel.
